Our History

Rockdale Baptist Church was established May 29, 1847 by founding members Reverends James R. George, Nathan Johnson, Stephen Mayfield, and James Nix. Rev. George served as the first pastor. The 13 charter members included John E. & Mary Reagan, William & Elizabeth Pitts, John, Sara, Mary & Nancy McClung, E. 0. & Emily Dameron, John G. & Mary Snead, and Elias Wooley.

The number one article of faith upon which they were willing to be constituted was as follows:

"We believe in one only true and living God, the Father, Son and Holy Ghost, three in One. We believe that the Scriptures of the Old and New Testament are the Word of God and the only rule of faith and practice."

The original 1847 "old Rock Dale baptist meeting house" is where the members met until around 1872. A new house of worship that was across the street from our current building is believed to have been used from 1872-1902, until the white, wooden church building was erected. A recreation building, known as "The Community Building", with Sunday School rooms, auditorium, and kitchen facilities was completed and dedicated in 1951. The Community Building has since been destroyed by fire. The pastorium located on the church property was built in 1955. In 1956, additional space was needed for Sunday School. Action was taken and five new rooms were added over the existing ones at the rear of the church sanctuary. In 1959, to accommodate the ever increasing number of Sunday School members, four additional class rooms were added to the Community Building. A new educational building was dedicated on February 17, 1963. This building housed the Beginner, Primary, Junior & intermediate age departments as well as the suite of church offices. In 1969, plans were completed for the building of a new sanctuary to replace the one erected in 1902. Ground was broken on February 14, 1969 and our present sanctuary was dedicated August 10, 1969. A fellowship hall with Sunday School rooms replaced the building that was destroyed by fire in 1977. An additional two story annex for pre-school was built and dedicated February 1, 1986.

Thirty-seven pastors have served this church. As the years have passed, rules and by-laws have changed to adjust to the times,

but the original purpose of Rockdale Baptist has remained steadfast.

Through the years, its members have continued under God's Holy Spirit to move forward in faithful service.
